Overview
The African Cohort Study is a multi-site cohort study conducted by the US Military HIV Research Program in collaboration with sites in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria. The primary objective of the study is to longitudinally assess the impact of clinical practices, biological factors and sociobehavioral issues on HIV infection and disease progression in an African context.

The Memory and Aging Center at UCSF provides neurobehavioral oversight for this work. Our primary objective is to estimate rates of impaired neuropsychological testing performance in comparison to in-country control subjects and to determine if biological factors including HIV subtype (clade) and CD4 lymphocyte nadir count are predictive of neuropsychological testing performance.

Research Opportunities: Investigators interested in research questions related to cognition in Africa should contact Dr. Valcour directly by email. There are numerous potential study questions that can be answered from the data. Some captured data are described here:
  • Cognitive and behavioral data: functional abilities, International HIV Dementia Scale, Auditory Verbal Learning and Memory, Grooved Pegboard Test, Action Fluency, Trails A
  • Demographic data: age, religion, ARV status and medications, pregnancies, WHO stage
  • Medical information: comorbidities including cardiovascular and neurological morbidities, vital signs, anthropometric measures, malaria data, hospitalizations,
  • Laboratory data: viral loads, chemistry including cholesterol and liver function, HgbA1c, CRP, CD4, kidney function, U/A, syphilis, CBC, resistance testing
