Guide for International Scholars working in Thailand
Required Documents and Timeline
Medical fellows working in Thailand must apply for a temporary Thai medical license approximately six months in advance of their travel to Thailand. The temporary license is good for one year. The application requires submission of copies of university diplomas and medical license, as well as two 4x4cm photos.
Visiting scholars must also apply for a Thai visa. The scholar must provide a copy of their passport at least 3 months prior to travel, and our collaborators in Thailand will issue a letter of invitation, which must be included with the visa application. The visa application should be submitted at least 2 months prior to travel.

Malpractice and Travel Insurance
International scholars working in Thailand are covered under a Training Affiliation Agreement between UCSF and SEARCH, which extends UCSF malpractice insurance to medical personnel working abroad under the auspices of the agreement. All UCSF-affiliated personnel will also register their travel with the university, which provides travel insurance.
UCSF IRB Approval of Research Activities
All research-related activities must be approved by the UCSF Committee on Human Research (CHR). UCSF CHR requires 6-8 weeks to review any protocol modifications involving human subjects research.
