Post Doctorate Position in HIV Imaging Research – Memory and Aging Center/UCSF
(http://memory.ucsf.edu & http://valcourlab.ucsf.edu)
The HIV program at the Memory and Aging Center (MAC) at UCSF, directed by Dr. Victor Valcour, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in clinical neuroimaging research. Outstanding pre-doctoral, research associate, or junior faculty level candidates with the necessary skills and requirements may also be considered. The HIV program is housed in a brand-new research center on the vibrant UCSF Mission Bay campus, with state of the art facilities and equipment including two research-dedicated 3.0 T Siemens MRIs and access to a 7.0T MRI for human research. The MAC, directed by Dr. Bruce Miller, houses a consortium of researchers whose work focuses on neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease, neuro-inflammatory disorders, and Lewy Body Dementia, among others. Researchers in the MAC have broad expertise with a broad array of image analyses techniques. The HIV program works closely with the Imaging Genetic Center at USC through contractual agreements adding opportunities of the ideal candidate to spend time there and transfer emerging techniques to the broader MAC group.
The HIV program within the MAC is currently in its seventh year of continuous funding following the relocation of the PI to this site in 2007. Current funding includes 2 NIH R-series grants and several smaller grants with research studies encompassing both chronic and acute HIV infection. The ideal candidate would have interest in the potential for emergence of neurodegenerative disorders in aging HIV patients. Multiple opportunities exist for international work in Asia and Africa. Primary investigating modalities include neuropsychological testing, neurological examination, immunological studies, and multimodal imaging (structural, DTI, MRS, ASL, resting state fMRI). Details of our work can be found on our lab website (ValcourLab.ucsf.edu).
It is anticipated that the incumbent will have access and participate broadly within the Memory and Aging Center as an integrated and collaborative investigator. Details of the program can be found at www.memory.ucsf.edu.
The ideal postdoctoral candidate will have interest in HIV and neurodegenerative disorders, with experience in cognitive and neuroimaging data analysis. Experience with advanced imaging analysis techniques (e.g. multivariate statistics, functional connectivity, DTI analyses, FreeSurfer processing, etc.) is desirable. For individuals with neuropsychological training, demonstration of excellence in interpretation of such data is important. Ideally, the candidate will have a publication record and have interest in developing a research niche within the HIV program for independent funding opportunities. All requirements for the Ph.D. degree must be completed by the date of hire.
Position requirements include:
· Experience with MRI data acquisition and analysis
· Strong analytical and statistical skills
· Outstanding writing skills
· Strong computer and data management skills
The position is initially for one year, with possible renewal for a second year. Salary will be in line with University post-doctorate levels. Interested individuals should contact Victor Valcour ([email protected]) for further information. Please include:
· Cover letter stating interest, relevant research experience, how the position will factor into your research career, and earliest
possible start date
· Curriculum vitae, including publications
· Graduate Transcript
· 3 (minimum) references willing to provide letters upon request (letters may also be forwarded with the application.
Internship Opportunity- Fall 2020
Please contact Shireen Javandel to inquire about Valcour Lab internship openings. Internship positions within our lab are ideal for undergraduate students interested in medical school or graduate studies in neurosciences or neuropsychology.
